Two-dimensional beam profile monitor for the detection of alpha-emitting radioactive isotope beam

Ions with similar charge-to-mass ratios cannot be separated from existing beam profile monitors (BPMs) in nuclear facilities which low-energy radioactive ions are produced due to fusion reactions. In this study, we developed a BPM using microchannel plate and charge-coupled device differentiate the profiles of alpha-decaying isotopes other (reaction products) reaction. This was employed optimize francium ion (Fr+) at Cyclotron Radioisotope Center (CYRIC), Tohoku University, for electron permanent electric dipole moment (e-EDM) search experiments Fr atoms. We demonstrated performance by separating Fr+ reaction products during an oxygen (18O) gold (197Au) target. However, as mass Au is close that Fr, these elements filter challenge, dominant number Au+ renders invisible when typical BPM. Therefore, employing new BPM, could successfully observe beams distinctly measuring alpha decay isotopes. novel technique monitor alpha-emitting covers broad range lifetimes, example, approximately 1 s 10 min, can implemented alpha-emitter utilized medical applications.
